A Weekend Itinerary for a Perfect Getaway in Watamu

A weekend at the perfectly placed Amani Beach House! (Please bear in mind this is 3 night minimum stay)

Day 1: Arrival and Beach Relaxation

Morning: Arrival in Watamu

  • Arrive in Watamu: Fly into Malindi Airport or Moi International Airport in Mombasa, then take a taxi or matatu to Watamu.

  • Check-In: Settle into your accommodation. We recommend staying at one of Discover Watamu’s beachfront houses for an unparalleled ocean view and easy beach access. (You may need to extend your stay one more night if you want a beachfront house as they are three nights minimum!)

Afternoon: Relax on the Beach

  • Watamu Beach: Spend your afternoon relaxing at Watamu Beach. Enjoy the soft white sand, clear blue waters, and the gentle sound of the waves. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or a leisurely walk.

  • Lunch: Head to one of the beachfront restaurants for a delicious seafood lunch. Try the local delicacies and enjoy the fresh catch of the day. Some top-rated restaurants include Ocean Sports and Papa Remo Beach.

Evening: Sunset and Dinner

  • Sunset at Mida Creek: Take a dhow ride in Mida Creek and watch the stunning sunset. The mangrove-lined shores and tranquil waters make it a picturesque spot.

Dinner: Dine at Pilipan Restaurant, known for its seafood and beautiful views.

  • Glass Bottom Boat Tour: For a more relaxed marine experience, book a tour with one of the local operators offering glass bottom boat trips. Enjoy the underwater views without getting wet, and look out for the Discover Watamu

Afternoon: Cultural and Historical Exploration

  • Gede Ruins: Visit the ancient Gede Ruins, a historical site dating back to the 12th century. Explore the well-preserved ruins and learn about the Swahili culture.

  • Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Swahili meal at a local restaurant near the ruins.

Evening: Shopping and Nightlife

  • Local Markets: Visit the local markets to buy handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. Support local artisans and take home a piece of Watamu's culture.

Dinner and Drinks:

Day 3: Nature and Relaxation

Morning: Nature Walk and Bird Watching

  • Arabuko Sokoke Forest: Take a guided nature walk in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Spot rare bird species, butterflies, and other wildlife. The forest is a biodiversity hotspot and a must-visit for nature lovers.

  • Breakfast: Enjoy a packed breakfast at your accommodation before heading out.

Afternoon: Relax and Unwind

  • Spa Treatment: Book a spa session at Medina Palms. Enjoy a relaxing massage, facial, or other treatments to rejuvenate your body and mind.

  • Lunch: Have a light lunch at your accommodation or a nearby café.

Evening: Farewell Dinner

  • Sunset at Watamu Beach: Spend your last evening watching the sunset at Watamu Beach. Reflect on your trip and enjoy the tranquil beauty.
